Continuing Professional Development (CPD) 2007-2008

Specialists will be offering a variety of topics on the use of hypnosis in clinical and experimental contexts as CPD courses. These courses provide Hypnosis UK students and former UCL Hypnosis Studies students with opportunities for further study. The Certificate and Diploma modules can also be attended as  revision / further study for CPD purposes.

The overall aims of the HUUK CPD programme are to:

  1. Provide Diploma / MSc graduates of the UCL Hypnosis Studies programmes with the opportunity to update their knowledge and extend their clinical skills.
  2. Provide Diploma graduates of the UCL Hypnosis Studies programmes with the opportunity to work towards the HUUK Advanced Diploma
  3. Provide Certificate graduates of the UCL Hypnosis Studies programmes with the opportunity to complete additional studies necessary to gain the HUUK Diploma qualification.
     

HUUK courses are taught within the ethical guidelines of the International Society of Hypnosis.  Students accepted on these courses undertake to abide by these guidelines in their application of hypnosis.

Please note that HUUK courses fulfil the following CPD specified by professional bodies.
1. They have concise educational aims and objectives.

2. They have clear anticipated outcomes.

3. They have quality control (i.e. students are given the opportunity to evaluate the delivery and content of each module).

4. Students are given proof of attendance / participation (a course certificate stating hours attended). Students also receive feedback on written assignments and clinical competence; and receive proof of attendance of supervision hours completed.   

HUUK courses are taught in Association with the Department of Psychology, UCL, and in the case of ur CPD for dentists, with Eastman CPD. All qualifications are awarded solely and exclusively by HUUK

  • Graduates of the UCL Hypnosis Studies Certificate Programmes are restricted to selecting A6, A9, A10, from this section.

The tutors will summarise current trends in hypnosis research, give particular examples of hypnosis used as an experimental tool in pain research and describe how MRI scanners have been used in conjunction with hypnosis to research a range of psychological processes.

Eriksonian hypnosis in clinical practice

Dr Wendy Gonsalkorale

Formerly lead therapist of the Manchester University Hospital service for IBS sufferers, Wendy Gonsalkorale has extensive experience of using clinical hypnosis. Wendy has a particular interest in Eriksonian techniques and her work has been greatly influenced by methods used by her colleague Dr Michael Yapko.

On day 1 participants will learn about the principles and basic methods of the Ericksonian approach (e.g. utilisation, seeding, formulation of indirect suggestions) and how these might applied in clinical practice. Day 2 will focus on more advanced techniques, e.g. story-telling, and confusion techniques. Evidence to support such techniques will be discussed. Case studies and practical sessions will be included on both days.

Ms Marcia-Degun-Mather

Psychologists and medics only

Marcia Degun Mather, Consultant Clinical Psychologist in private practice, has taught on the UCL Hypnosis Studies programme since its inception in 1993. She is author of the book ‘Hypnosis, dissociation and survivors of child abuse: Understanding and treatment’.

Marcia’s experience in using hypnosis to treat eating disorders and sexual dysfunction is unsurpassed. Both workshop presentations will include case presentations and practice issues and will also be of interest to those working with survivors of sexual abuse.  The workshop will address difficulties that arise when treating these clinical problems as well as offer an opportunity for participants to present their own cases and ideas.

Maximising the benefits of using hypnosis in dentistry

Cath Potter

Cath Potter is currently a Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow at the University of Manchester Dental School (MSc course in the Control of Pain and Anxiety) and Senior Dental Officer for Salford PCT. She has previously worked in General Dental Practice, the CDS and the hospital dental service and has used hypnosis in all these settings for the benefit of her patients. She is a co-author of ‘Hypnosis and Communication in Dental Practice’, a book recently published by Quintessence.

In this course Cath reflects on her experience of using hypnosis in dentistry and illustrates ways in which she has maximised the benefits of using hypnotic techniques with patients. She will illustrate her talk with case studies - a focus being on treating challenging patients, and challenging clinical problems.

Writing for journal publication

Dr Peter Naish

Editor of the book ‘What is Hypnosis?’ (Open University Press) and author of a considerable number of articles published peer reviewed journals, Peter Naish has a great deal of experience in writing for publication.

This one-day course is for clinicians who are considering writing up their case reports for journal publication. 

The course will include practical hints, advice on increasing chances of being accepted for publication, examples and general guidance.

Hypnosis and positive psychology

Dr Nick Baylis

Nick Baylis is a well-being scientist and Co-Director of The Well-being Institute at the

University of Cambridge,  author of 'Learning from Wonderful Lives', and a former Times columnist. (www.NickBaylis.com)

In this half day course Nick will give an overview of ‘Positive Psychology and the Skills of Well-being’.  The focus of the talk will be on the potential of using hypnotic techniques to develop these skills. Examples from Nick’s practice will be given.

Pushing the boundaries of hypnosis: Hypnosis as an adjunct to anaesthesia and as the sole form of analgesia in surgical settings

Dr Mike Gow

Dr Gow appeared on ‘Hypnosurgery Live’ (More4, April 10th 2006) using hypnosis as the sole form of analgesia during implant surgery.  He is to be president of the Scottish BSMDH in March 2008- the youngest ever to be given this honour.

This workshop includes teaching participants the use of hypnosis techniques as an adjunct to anaesthesia, and as the sole form of analgesia in cases when the use of anaesthetics is contraindicated. Also covered on the course is selection and preparation of clients. 

This CPD workshop is also a new module on the HUUK Hypnosis Applied to Dentistry programme.

Whilst this course will be of particular interest to dentists, surgeons and anaesthetists, it is open to all health professionals and researchers

Graduates of the UCL Diploma course will be able to attend the following Hypnosis Unit UK’s certificate / diploma modules as revision / further study.

 

Fees: £120.00 per day or £165.00 per day if attended as part of topping up the UCL HUUK Certificate to the HUUK Diploma (includes notes sent via the internet, additional £10.00 payable for applicants wishing to purchase hard copies of notes).
